Do some timber terms have you stumped? Here’s a list of a few timber terms that you’ll see here at Greenmount Timber!

Australiana a unique and increasingly popular conservation grade of wood where wood is milled to preserve gum veins, spirals, burls, insect tracks, and other grain characteristics, essentially preserving the “history” of the wood.

Classic grade is traditionally milled wood that removes most blemishes, preserving only the natural grain of the wood. Classic grade wood produces a simple, yet elegant presentation and allows for versatility of application.

Fascia is a flat board that runs horizontally along the eaves of a roof and conceals the ends of the roof rafters, giving the roof a more finished look.

Grain The grain of wood is made up of the veins or lines in the wood. The density and type of the grain adds unique character to each type of wood. Wood grains are:

    1) straight
    2) curly: naturally wavy
    3) interlocking: often producing a striped or swirl effect

Hyspan® LVL is a continuous Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) product and used in applications such as rafters, floor joists, roof beams, lintels and strutting beams.

Lintel is a the horizontal beam that forms the upper part of a window or door frame and supports the structure above it.

Parquetry is a patterned wood inlay used to cover a floor.

Tannin is a group of organic compounds found in the bark, roots, stems, and seeds of many plants that gives colour to iron containing substances.

Timber Screening is an open work fencing application that helps block noise and adds to privacy yet allows light into the fenced area.

Turnery are wood products that are made on a lathe.
